Living with High Functioning Autism

It took a long time for me to come to grips with this.  I was motivated to write this blog after seeing an article on CNN today about Autism. “Autism 911, a Cry for Help” was a very short but moving article on the growing concerns of a family dealing with a teenage girl with high functioning autism. The article also has a 2 minute video documenting some of the behaviors that the family deals with, and specifically, how her behaviors have led to her completely controlling her house.

I am posting this article because it is the first time that I have seen a documented video account of a situation that almost identically resembles what we have been struggling with for the past several years. We often hear from others that it is very difficult for them to understand how such a sweet little girl could transform into something completely different. Our response has always been that unless you live with it, you really can’t understand. I am writing this article for anyone who knows us, or knows our situation, and hope that you take the time to watch the video.  Those two minutes go a very long way in painting an accurate portrait of our situation.
